The recent surge of the rand has put South Africa back on top as the biggest economy in Africa, a position it has reclaimed from Nigeria.
Bloomberg reported that the size of South Africa’s economy is $301 billion at the rand’s current exchange rate, while Nigeria’s GDP is $296 billion. The data was taken from the end of 2015.
Since the start of the year, the rand has gained over 16% against the dollar while Nigeria’s naira has lost over a third of its value.
That doesn’t mean all is rosy, though. Bloomberg notes that both countries face the risk of recession and it’s Miser Index recently rated South Africa as the third most miserable place in the world.
“More than the growth outlook, in the short term the ranking of these economies is likely to be determined by exchange rate movements,” Alan Cameron, an economist at Exotix Partners LLP, told Bloomberg.
Finally, the Ekiti

cattles and their rearers. The PS who said his ministry had severally
written to the Sultan, IG and other instrumentalities of the federal
government with no positive result to show for it urged Nigerians to
emulate other countries where animals are reared without seen roaming
the streets.
“There is justification for this action, cattle rearing should be seen
as private business such as snail rearing, piggery, poultry and so on,
modern technology should be adopted in the business, they should be
confined in ranches, the energy the cattles dissipates in transit is
converted to added weight which is an added advantage to the rearer”,
Abegunde said.
