Chittagong City Corporation’s allocation lowered for not paying bribes: Mayor Nasir

At a programme on Wednesday in the city, he said, “This time we received only Tk 800 million. But that amount would’ve been Tk 3 to Tk 3.5 billion if I had bribed the officials according to their demand.”

“There is no lack in my initiative and sincerity for the city’s development. But we need assistance from many people.”

The general secretary of ruling Awami League’s Chittagong metropolitan unit, said, “I was told that whatever amount the city corporation needs will be given as block allocation, but I will have to give them 5 percent for that.”

“When I asked where would I get the money, I was told to manage it from the contractors. How would I do that?

“I asked whether I could write it that I will have to take a 5 percent pay cut to give the money to the ministry. They said I couldn’t do that,” he said.
The mayor was also critical of the delay in getting administration approval for a project to excavate a canal from Barhaikhal to Shah Amanat Bridge even after it was cleared by the ECNEC a while back.

He said the project’s deadline ends in June next year.

“And two months from now, news reports will say that the city corporation has failed. But what can I do if the finance ministry does not disburse the money?
